Segun Onayinka, the immediate past Chairman of 1989 Set of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association has donated a state-of-the-art Interactive ICT Centre to Government College Ibadan, in honor of his late father, Gbegande Olusegun Onayinka (1291, Field) of the 1962 Set on Wednesday, 4th November, 2020.

The Commissioner for Education in Oyo State, Barrister Sunkanmi Olaleye, appreciated the donor for his kind gesture and his love for humanity, which made him think of giving back to his Alma mater. The Commissioner, ably represented by the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Alhaji L.A. Kareem, enjoined the students to judiciously make use of the ICT equipment provided. He also urged the GCI Principals (Schools 1, 2 and the Senior School) to ensure that they secure all the infrastructures donated by Old Boys so as to spur them to do more. Alhaji Kareem said that the State is looking at awarding Old Students Associations that have been very active and proactive in the maintenance and development of their Alma mater respectively, and that he is sure that GCIOBA will be the best. He also encouraged Old Boys to keep doing anything they can to ensure the sustenance of the school. Kareem lauded the GCIOBA in general for their contributions so far towards making the school a model in Oyo State.

Pastor Segun Onayinka, the third Fielder amongst the quartet of the Onayinkas that attended GCI, in his remarks explained that he decided to give back in honour of his late father because GCI helped them in all aspects of their lives. He explicated that when Gbegande was alive, he lived GCI, breathed GCI and loved the school so much that he was very active in Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) as he was the Chairman of his Set and a staunch member of GCIOBA-Lagos Branch. Onayinka urged the students to make good use of the Centre for learning purpose. In conclusion, he stated that he will soon begin to give prizes to the best students in SSS 1, 2 and 3 in Biology as his father was once a teacher in the subject at GCI.

The National President of GCIOBA, Dr Bolanle Olawale Babalakin (Grier, 1971) while addressing the students, advised them to make good use of the facility and shun fraudulent online activities. Babalakin who was represented by Tola Obembe of 1978 Set, the Vice President 1 of the Association, beseeched them to ensure that nothing is damaged at the ICT Centre and also every other facility built or provided by Old Boys should be maintained properly; he said if they do so, Old Boys will be glad to do more for the benefit of the students. He also urged them to emulate the life of Pastor Onayinka as this will also place them on the right track and when they become like him, they can definitely do greater than him.

The Chairman of the GCIOBA Asset Management Committee, Arc. Oladapo Sonola (Carr, 1970) who addressed the audience lamented the dearth of teachers in the school. He explained that the Old Boys keep making things available for the use of the students but the School lack personnel to teach them. He said that the Association has done what it could by employing teachers and paying them. He implored the State Government to salvage the situation and also partner with the Old Boys in totally restoring the glory of the school.

The Principal of the School, Mr Oluwole Adewale in his Address, commended the Old Boys Association for always being there for the school. He especially thanked Segun Onayinka for his philanthropic gesture on thinking it well to provide the students with a 21st century ICT Centre, he promised that the Management of the institution would do all in its power to secure the project.

Pastor S.O, Oladele, a onetime Principal of Government College Ibadan who happened to be a House Master while Segun was in GCI, in his goodwill message, praised the donor for being a good ambassador of the school. He appreciated him for also respecting the memory of his father, late Gbegande Olusegun Onayinka (1962) and making him an eponym of the ICT Centre. He therefore pleaded with the School management and the Students to take good care of the ICT Centre and see to it that it is rightly utilized.

An Old Boy and classmate of the benefactor, Kunle Craig, who is also a Representative of Labster, a Techno-Scientific Company based in Denmark, was present with his team to introduce the Company's Virtual Scientific Laboratory Simulator to the Students which they can only access through the internet. The Lab will help Students in understanding Scientific Concepts better. One of the Representatives while giving an overview of Labster explained that the Company, through Kunle Craig has given GCI three (3) months free access to the Scientific Lab.

Also present at the occasion were Chief Olaleye Falore, a member of the 1962 Set and former Vice President of GCIOBA, Yinka Yusuf, Secretary of the Association, the 1989 Class Chairman, Jimoh Muyideen, the principal officers of Government College Ibadan, members of the 1989 Class Set, as well as staff and students of Government College Ibadan.

The Students of the school, in return entertained their guests with a playlet whose message was to the students, telling them to avoid online corrupt practices and use the Internet positively.
