On Monday, March 21, 2022, the esteemed September Set of 1991 from Government College Ibadan held its annual essay writing competition and interschool debate.
The essay competition, themed 'Nigeria's Natural Resources: A Blessing or Curse,' involved students from SSS 1 and SSS 2. It lasted for 45 minutes, starting at 8:00 AM, and took place in the newly renovated English lecture theatre funded by the set. A total of 36 participants, comprising the top three English students from each of the six class arms, took part.
Following the essay competition, an interschool debate was held in the GCI Assembly Hall, focusing on the topic 'Social Media: A Bad Influence Among Teenagers.' Mrs. Shobo, the Head of the Languages and Linguistics Department, served as the Chief Judge, supported by two other judges from the department, Mr. Akanni and Mr. Adebiyi.
In the debate, Olaniran Ibrahim and his supporting speakers from Junior School 1, who argued against the motion, emerged victorious with 337 points. Esuola Timothy and his team from Junior School II secured second place with 332 points. The winners and their tutors received recognition for their achievements.
The event also featured a Spelling Bee, moderated by Dipo Adewunmi (Swanston, 9035), a member of the September 1991 Set. Olamide Olawunmi, Asiwaju Omobolaji, and Eze Benedict were rewarded for correctly spelling the dictated words.
Mr. P.A. Awodiran, the Principal of Senior School, expressed gratitude to the set for their ongoing support, noting that such programs sharpen students' minds and enhance their oratory skills. Niyi Olayiwola commended the students and their tutors for their efforts, encouraging those already on social media to use it positively and avoid negative influences.
Also in attendance were Mr. Oloyede O. A. and Mr. Olapade T. O., the Principals of Junior School 1 and 2, respectively, along with Niyi Olayiwola, Vice Chairman (Ibadan) of the 1991 September Set, David Olayiwola, the Secretary of the set, and other staff members. It's worth noting that the inaugural edition of this program took place last year, with Junior School 1 claiming first place and Junior School II coming in second.
