GCIOBA Honors Four Old Boys and Launches Multimillion-Naira Projects

On Saturday, October 21, 2017, the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) celebrated its members by honoring Prof. Jide Owoeye, Chairman of the Governing Council at Lead City University, alongside three other distinguished alumni for their significant contributions to education and society.

The awards ceremony took place on the school's grounds in Apata, Ibadan, as part of the 88th Anniversary and 2017 Reunion festivities. Notable attendees included the Association's Patron and renowned agronomist, Dr. Lekan Are, and Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, among other esteemed guests.

The honored alumni included Adeniyi Owolade (1968), John Oshinyimika (1965), and Thomas Obanya (1964).

A key highlight of the event was the commissioning of multimillion-naira projects, initiated by various Class Sets to commemorate their milestones since joining the prestigious institution.

The projects featured the refurbishment of the Physics and Chemistry Laboratories by the 1967-1971/1973 set, marking their 50th Anniversary with an investment of Eighteen Million Naira. Additionally, the 1982 Set renovated the SSS I Block of classrooms at a cost of Three Million Naira to celebrate their 35th Anniversary. Similarly, the 1977 Set refurbished the Class Five Block of classrooms. Prof. Olowofela inaugurated the facilities and praised the Old Boys for their commitment to giving back, urging other alumni associations to follow suit.

GCIOBA's National President, Biodun Jolaoso, emphasized the Association's dedication to revitalizing the school. He acknowledged the Oyo State Government for establishing Governing Councils for secondary schools and highlighted the collaborative efforts that have led to the school's revival.

In addition to the twelve students awarded scholarships through the Dereck John Bullock Foundation, the Association has established a N250 million Intervention Fund to further support the school, with contributions from all branches, class sets, and members, both locally and abroad.
